Main content start

Overview

The intent of the PhD minor is to be able to take Significant Programming and Core Courses in Computer Science to acquire Breadth and Depth of the PhD minor.

A candidate must complete 20 units of Computer Science graduate-level coursework. These units must include three (3) 200-level courses from the Computer Science Master's Core course list and one (1) Significant Programming project course. See PhD minor worksheet for a list of courses. You must take all courses for a letter grade and hold an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.

How To Apply

PhD minor applications are accepted year-round. You should apply to PhD minor after you have been granted candidacy in your home department. Do not wait to apply when you are closer to graduating or on TGR status. You must complete all courses before entering TGR status. Do not wait to finish all the courses before you apply to the program.

There are two components to the CS PhD minor application.

  • Submit your supporting CS PhD minor application documents to the Computer Science Department via email to phdstudentservices@cs.stanford.edu for our review. You must submit a copy of your transcript, PhD minor worksheet, and a copy of your home department's approved candidacy form.

  • After our Department has approved your supporting documents, you will receive confirmation to submit your Computer Science PhD minor application through Axess. You'll need to navigate to student eForms inside your "My Academics" drop-down menu within Axess.

When submitting your application through Axess, make sure to select your home department and the Computer Science Department for approval. The application form is approved by your current department first and then our Department.

NOTE: The courses are updated yearly at the beginning of the Summer quarter. If you have already applied and have been approved for CS PhD minor by our office, then we will honor the courses you had listed on your worksheet at the time of your application.

After Application Approval

Students are required to have faculty representation from the Computer Science Department (CS faculty, courtesy CS faculty, joint CS faculty count) on the University oral examination committee. Before your defense date, submit a copy of your University oral examination form via email to phdstudentservices@cs.stanford.edu.

Please note that the PhD minor is processed for conferral by the Computer Science Department. When you submit your application to graduate, your PhD minor degree conferral will automatically get routed to Computer Science Department for approval.

If you have any questions regarding the PhD minor in Computer Science, please email phdstudentservices@cs.stanford.edu.
